The ladies took on Darwen Ladies Reserves today in their first game back after the Christmas break. After a brilliant comeback from the ladies to draw 2-2, manager Elle Kayley reflects on the team's performance.
"Well today's game was full of emotions! It was our first game back after nearly two months due to the Christmas break and postponements, and it was obvious in the first half we were rusty which lead to us conceding two goals early on.
At half time we had a discussion about working for the team and everyone giving their all for each other and in the second half we found our fire and put in big tackles across the pitch.
This passion and energy kept us going and we created chances but it didn’t look like it was going to be our day, until late in the 87th minute when Gabby Sabatino scored a brilliant goal from the left hand side outside the box which lofted over the goalkeeper.
After this the ladies had their tails up and everyone was giving their all in the last few minutes of the game. The ladies pushed high up the pitch and piled the pressure on Darwen, with Casey Blaggs going from centre back to striker! Finally, after a long throw into the box which was flicked on by Kerry Reeves, Shireen Kempster headed home into the goal in the 92nd minute!
We were buzzing! After such a rusty start to the game and to come away with a point after two late goals, it felt amazing and was what the girls deserved! I’m so proud of the team's attitude and pure resilience to keep going in the second half, without all of the player's giving their all, we couldn’t have achieved this result. Hopefully we can take this energy into our next game!"
